The Ohrid Ultra-Trail Samotska Trail is a 42km mountain race (officially marketed as the 40K) set entirely within and around the UNESCO World Heritage landscape of Lake Ohrid in North Macedonia. The course starts at 08:30 from the historic St. Naum Monastery on the southern lakeshore (695m elevation), climbs steeply above Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa, traverses the ridgeline of Galicica National Park with dual-lake panoramas, and finishes in Ohrid town square. Elevation gain varies by edition: 2026 ITRA measured 41.2 km / +1,641m; 2024 measured 40.4 km / +1,960m. The nominal distance is 42 km with 1,950 m D+ (46.4 m/km).
The race forms part of the Ohrid Ultra-Trail weekend (8th edition in 2026), alongside the 105km flagship. It is a UTMB 50K Index qualifying race (listed as Samotska Trail Marathon 40K) and part of the Europe Trail Cup and Alpe Adria Trail Cup circuits. The 200-place cap, 11-hour time limit, and daytime 08:30 start make the Samotska Trail the accessible entry point to the Ohrid weekend -- the official site describes it as a fast trail suitable for many trail runners.
Entry fee EUR 42 (early bird EUR 32). NOT FAR: Ohrid Airport (OHD) is 13 minutes from town. With a sub-EUR 50 entry, UNESCO lakeside setting, dual-lake ridgeline views, and UTMB Index points, this is one of the best-value destination trail races in Southeastern Europe. Next edition expected May 2027. 2026 results available at ohrid.ultratrail.mk.
