Transvulcania Ultramarathon 73km: Volcanic Ultra Trail Racing on La Palma, Canary Islands
From the Faro de Fuencaliente lighthouse at the southern tip of La Palma, the Transvulcania Ultramarathon climbs 73 kilometres through volcanic rock and ancient pine forest toward the summit of Roque de los Muchachos at 2,426 metres before descending to finish in Los Llanos de Aridane. The course carries two of the most striking terrain statistics in the DiscoverTrailRaces database: the second-largest single descent and the fifth-largest single ascent of any race we track.
With 4,350 metres of elevation gain and 59.54 metres per kilometre of vertical density, Transvulcania Ultra is one of the most relentlessly vertical trail races on the continent. First held in 2009, it has attracted elite runners including Kilian Jornet, Emelie Forsberg, and Dakota Jones across its Skyrunner and UTMB World Series eras. The 2026 edition sold out and produced double course records: David Sinclair finished in 6:32:24 and Blandine L'Hirondel in 7:43:47. Entry for 2026 was 110 euros; register early for 2027.
