K100 Sold Out -- K55 Is Still Open: The Harder Race Per Kilometre
Q: What is the Krakonosova K55? A: The Krakonosova K55 is the 55km distance of the Krakonosova stovka (Krakonos's Hundred), one of the oldest mountain endurance events in Central Europe. Founded in 1966 and reaching its 60th edition in 2026, the event is held annually in late June in the Krkonose (Giant Mountains) National Park, starting and finishing in Vrchlabi. The K55 runs on Saturday morning (daytime, no night section) the day after the flagship K100. It covers 55km with 2,200m D+ (40 m/km), with 44.4% of the course uphill and only 14.9% flat. Entry fee is 1,050 CZK (approximately EUR 43). The K55 is not sold out for 2026, unlike the K100 which sold out in May. The race is named for Krakonos, the legendary mountain spirit of Czech and German Riesengebirge folklore.
Opening Climb at km 0.09: The Giant Mountains Start Immediately in Vrchlabi
Q: Is the Krakonosova K55 harder than the K100? A: By per-kilometre metrics, yes. The K55 has a higher uphill percentage (44.4% vs 39.8%), less flat terrain (14.9% vs 18.7%), and a similar D+/km (40 m/km vs ~39 m/km) -- all of which make the K55 more gradient-concentrated than the K100. The K55 also delivers 85% climbing-or-descending terrain with almost no recovery flat. The dominant terrain feature is Descent #1 at km 35.19: 8.82km dropping 768m (-8.70% average) -- the course's longest and deepest single descent arriving in the second half on fatigued legs. The K55 runs in daylight only (Saturday morning start) and avoids the night-running challenge of the K100, which makes it more accessible in one dimension -- but the gradient profile makes it a serious mountain 55km by any European comparison.
Descent #1: 8.82km, -768m -- The Quad-Destroying Second Half of the K55
Q: Can I still enter the Krakonosova K55 if the K100 is sold out? A: For the 2026 edition (June 20, 2026), the K55 was not sold out -- registration remained open until June 12, 2026 at 15:00, significantly longer than the K100 (which sold out May 19). The K55 typically has remaining capacity when the K100 is full, making it the accessible route into the Krakonosova stovka weekend for runners who missed the flagship distance. Registration is via sportchallenge.cz. For the 2027 edition, monitor sportchallenge.cz in spring; the K100 fills faster, so register early for both.
60 Years of Krakonosova Stovka -- One of Central Europe's Oldest Mountain Races
Q: What is the route of the Krakonosova K55? A: The K55 loops from Vrchlabi through the Krkonose (Giant Mountains) National Park (KRNAP). The opening climb begins at km 0.09 -- effectively from the start gun -- rising 533m over 6.69km toward the mountain plateau. The route traverses Giant Mountains terrain via switchback forest trails and exposed ridge paths, with three major climbs concentrated in the first 35km and a dominant descent (8.82km, -768m) from km 35 onward. The race passes through sections of the national park that have historically been subject to KRNAP access restrictions (route modifications occurred in past editions due to park management decisions). GPS and route tracking are advisable; official map on k100.ddmvrchlabi.cz/en/trasy/k55.
