Glacier-country grind: steep climbs above the treeline and raw alpine terrain in the Pitztal.
The Pitz Alpine Glacier Trail P90 – Pitztal Glacier Ultra is Austria's premier glacier ultra: 87km and 5,200m D+ departing Mandarfen in the Pitztal valley, climbing to a Mittagskogel-Scharte highpoint at 3,070m and crossing the Mittelbergferner glacier. Glacier spikes are mandatory equipment — one of the few European trail races requiring technical gear on course. Average uphill gradient ranks 3rd of 390 European trail races; average downhill gradient ranks 390th of 390 (the steepest average descent in the entire database). The race is extreme in both directions: razor-sharp ridgelines, glaciers, snowfields, and technical terrain demanding sure-footedness and a head for heights. UTMB Index Race, 4 ITRA points / Mountain Level 9. Part of the Salomon Pitz Alpine Glacier Trail, one of eight Golden Trail World Series (GTWS) venues. Night start: 23:00 Friday 31 July 2026, race day Saturday 1 August. 2026 edition sold out. 14th edition in 2026. Entry €215 (~2.47 €/km). Innsbruck Airport INN ~1.5 hrs; Munich MUC ~3.5 hrs. Limited accommodation in upper Pitztal — book early. Capacity 1,601.

Pitz Alpine Glacier Trail 87km: Avg Uphill Rank 3, Avg Downhill Rank 390, Mandatory Glacier Spikes, and the Most Extreme Bidirectional Gradient in the European Trail Race Database
Avg Uphill Rank 3/390: Why the Pitz Alpine Glacier Trail 87km Has the Third Steepest Average Climb in Europe▼
Q: What does avg uphill rank 3/390 mean for the Pitz Alpine Glacier Trail 87km? A: Average uphill gradient is the mean steepness of all ascending sections across the course. For the Pitz Alpine Glacier Trail P90, only 2 of the 390 European trail races in the DTR database have a steeper average climbing gradient. This is not about the total elevation gain (5,200m D+ at D+/km rank 108 is high but not the top tier) — it is about how steep each metre of ascent is on average. The course climbs via glacier faces, technical scharte approaches, and sustained high-alpine terrain where 20%+ gradient sections are the norm rather than the exception. The mandatory glacier spikes requirement and the 3,070m Mittagskogel-Scharte highpoint are the field evidence that confirms the statistical position.

Q: Why are glacier spikes mandatory equipment for the Pitz Alpine Glacier Trail P90? A: The P90 course crosses the Mittelbergferner glacier and traverses snowfields at elevations up to 3,070m (Mittagskogel-Scharte). The mandatory equipment list specifies spikes with a minimum 0.7cm length, with Snowline Spikes recommended by the organiser. Glacier ice and compacted snowfields at this altitude provide insufficient traction for standard trail running shoes on steep sections. This is one of very few European trail races where technical mountaineering gear is a race requirement rather than optional. The requirement also reflects the race's average downhill rank 390/390 — the steepest average descent in the European database — where glacier footing on descents makes spikes a safety necessity, not a preference.

Q: How does the Pitz Alpine Glacier Trail 87km relate to the Golden Trail World Series? A: The Salomon Pitz Alpine Glacier Trail event is one of eight venues in the Golden Trail World Series (GTWS), which fields the world's top elite trail runners in a short-course head-to-head format. The GTWS elite race at Pitz is a separate 24.5km / 1,618m D+ course starting at 11:15 on race day (August 1, 2026). The P90 – Pitztal Glacier Ultra (87km) is the mass-participant ultra distance running at the same event weekend but on a different course with a night start (23:00 Friday July 31). Runners entering the P90 are not competing in the GTWS race, but the shared event week and Salomon sponsorship give the 87km a prestigious international context.

Q: What is the Pitz Alpine Glacier Trail P90 course and what makes it technically demanding? A: The 87km P90 – Pitztal Glacier Ultra starts and finishes in Mandarfen in the Pitztal valley (Tyrol, Austria). The course is divided into three sections, each returning to Mandarfen. Key highlights include: the Mittagskogel-Scharte at 3,070m (highpoint), a glacier crossing of the Mittelbergferner via the Braunschweiger Hütte, the Cottbuser Höhenweg via the Kaunergrathütte, and descent via the Pitztaler Almenweg to Neuberg Alm. 8 aid stations are provided. Sure-footedness and a head for heights are prerequisites. Night start: 23:00 Friday 31 July 2026, with race day Saturday 1 August 2026. The statistically extreme profile (avg uphill rank 3/390, avg downhill rank 390/390) reflects the glacier faces and technical terrain that characterise every section.
