How Hard Is UTT Ultra Tisza-to 130km? (0m Elevation, Flat Dike Terrain, and 30-35 Degrees C of Hungarian Summer Heat as the Real Challenge)

Tisza-to (Lake Tisza) is Hungary's premier nature reserve lake in eastern Hungary, formed by dams on the Tisza River. The UTT 130km course circumnavigates the lake in two laps from Tiszafured, covering 18 sections on flat dike paths (prohibited to vehicles) — the shortest section is 1.6km, the longest 11.2km. The 65km turnaround is at Tiszafured. The route has no meaningful elevation: 66.8% of the course is flat, with occasional minor dike ramps (the largest climb is 29m). 30+ refreshment points are stationed around the course; hot food is served at Sarud (km 46.9 and 83.1).

The current (4th price band) entry fee is 42,900 HUF (approximately EUR 110-115, AUTO EUR 1.056/km). Tiered pricing ran from 31,900 HUF (early bird, by November 15, 2025) through three further bands. No processing fees apply — only possible bank transaction fees. UTT offers loyalty discounts of 10-30% for repeat UTT finishers and NN Ultrabalaton finishers, making it one of the few major European ultras with a structured returning-runner discount programme. The race is not sold out; registration is open at the 4th price band. The optional bike pacer (registered separately) is a notable logistics feature for crewing support.

Debrecen Airport (DEB) is the nearest gateway — approximately 70 minutes from Tiszafured by car. The race is NOT IS FAR. Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport (BUD) is also a viable option but requires a longer transfer (approximately 150+ minutes by car). Public transport to the race area is possible via trains to Fuzesabony or Tiszafured with a taxi or bus for the last mile, but a rental car is recommended. Accommodation around Tisza-to fills up in summer — book early. Tiszafured has resort-level hotel and holiday home supply in season.

UTT Ultra Tisza-to is in its 10th edition in 2026, founded in 2017. It is organised by Balatonman Triatlon Kft. — the same team behind NN Ultrabalaton, Hungary's iconic Lake Balaton circumnavigation race (~220km). UTT is often described as Ultrabalaton's eastern sibling: a flat lake circumnavigation in the same mould but around Tisza-to in eastern Hungary. The event draws approximately 4,000 total participants across all distances and team formats. Solo 130km finishers are approximately 59 (2025) and 43 (2024). Course records: Men: Drexler Gabor 10:18:45 (2021); Women: Szilagyine Dr. Toth Timea 11:38:06 (2023).

UTT is one of the most gradient-accessible 130km events in Europe — the course gains effectively 0m of elevation over 130km, running entirely on flat dike paths around Tisza-to. The challenge is not climbing fitness or technical descent skill but sustained flat-pace endurance over 130km under Hungarian July heat (typically 28-35C by mid-morning, no shade on the open dike). The 18-hour time limit requires a consistent ~7.2 km/h average. Intermediate cutoffs apply at Abadszalok 2 (9h30m outbound), Tiszafured (15h00m), and Sarud return (17h30m). The 2025 edition saw organisers deploy 1.5 tonnes of ice and 12 tonnes of water. Race date: July 4, 2026, 06:00 start.
