EVUT – Evia Ultra Trail 108km: Inaugural Edition 2026 — Sea-Level Beaches to 1,339m Across Euboea, Greece's Aegean Island Ultra

Significantly challenging for a 108km course. DW average uphill gradient of 13.4% — rank 141 of ~390 in the DTR database; only 140 courses are steeper on average uphill. 5.37km at 20%+ gradient; 4.59km at 15–20%; more than 17km above 10%. Official D+: 5,478m (~50.7 m/km), rank 208 of ~390. The course spans sea level to 1,339m twice — coastal beach sections at sea level bookend the island mountain ridges. 30.6% flat terrain provides recovery between steep climbs, but the climbing sections are consistently at 13%+ average. Opening climb is 738m in 5.61km from km 0.18. Mandatory gear: waterproof pants, thermal shirt, windbreaker, head torch + spare, emergency blanket, first aid kit, smartwatch with route loaded. 26-hour time limit. 180 finishers in the 2026 inaugural.

A 108.5km loop from Steni Elementary School (431m, 05:00 start), traversing the Kotylaia mountains and Evia coastline from sea level to 1,339m. 5,478m D+. 9 checkpoints: Seta (km 15 / 1,143m) → Vromonera (km 24) → Andronianoi (km 36.4) → Kymi (km 45.8 / drop bag / 10h cutoff) → Ortari (km 53.4) → Thapsa Beach (km 65.2 / 10m) → Vitalo (km 74 / pacer joins) → Vromonera 2 (km 80.6) → Seta 2 (km 91.7 / 1,037m) → Steni finish (km 108.5). Key features: mandatory 4.6km Kryfi Panagia cliff chapel detour (~km 60, BIB must be stamped at chapel and presented at Vitalo CP7); Tsilaros Beach descent to sea level (optional swim); Thapsa 'Blue Lagoon' (Itamos cliffs, 850m above Aegean); Setta Sinkhole plateau (dolines at 990m); Cephalonian fir forest in Kotylaia (trees over 35m); ancient Kalderimi stone-paved road sections. Bad weather alternate route available (dirt road via Setta Lake — must carry both GPX files).

Athens Airport (ATH) is approximately 115 minutes per Airtable logistics data, though real-world travel to Steni typically takes 2–3 hours including the Chalkida crossing and mountain road drive, depending on traffic and transport. Car is the most practical option. By public transport: bus from Athens to Chalkida, then local bus or taxi to Steni — feasible but requires planning on race morning. Accommodation is limited in Steni village; better bases are Chalkida (~1 hour from Steni) or Kymi (~45 min). Book accommodation early — Steni options fill for race weekend.

The sea-to-summit character and the Kryfi Panagia mechanic. The course descends to the Aegean Sea at sea level twice (Tsilaros and Thapsa beaches), then climbs back to altitude each time — a reset-to-zero dynamic unlike any land-locked mountain ultra. The mandatory 4.6km out-and-back detour to a chapel built inside a cliff face at km ~60 (BIB must be stamped; presented at next CP) is a unique race mechanic. ITRA 5 points, UTMB 100K Index from the inaugural edition. The Ortari peak section features cliffs described as among Europe's tallest rising directly from sea level. Predominantly Greek field in 2026 — international runners would be among the first to race it. 180 finishers; next edition April 3, 2027.
