Gran Trail de Peñalara is a 104km circular mountain ultra through the Sierra de Guadarrama above Madrid, organized by RSEA Peñalara — a historic mountaineering club founded in 1913. The race starts at 23:30 from Navacerrada (1,858m) and runs through the national park's defining terrain: La Maliciosa (2,227m), La Pedriza, Canto Cochino, La Morcuera, Rascafría, and the Peñalara summit (2,430m — highest peak in the Community of Madrid) via the 'Claveles' technical stone zone.
The entire first section runs in darkness. At 5,100m D+ over 104km (49 m/km), the 24h30 cutoff, mandatory warm layers, October summit conditions, and technical Claveles approach make this genuinely demanding for experienced mountain ultrarunners. Only 300 bibs available; registration opens each February 10 at 11:00 a.m. and sells out the same day. At 67 minutes from Madrid Barajas (MAD) with viable train access via Cercanías, GTP is among the most accessible elite mountain ultras in Europe. UTMB 100K Index listed. No GPX data in the DTR database. Next edition October 2027.
