Val d'Aran sits in a remote high-Pyrenean valley where sudden severe weather — storms, high winds, and rapid snowfall — can make the exposed high-pass sections dangerous or impassable. According to run247's 2025 results report, the 2023 and 2024 VDA flagship distances were cancelled or heavily curtailed due to storms, and the 2025 edition was shortened from 163km/10,000m to 142km/7,250m due to severe weather forecasts. As of 2025, only three runners have ever been recognized as VDA champions (implying only 2021 and 2022 produced full-distance completions before Joyeux-Bouillon's 2025 shortened-course win). FAR destination. Toulouse (TLS) is the nearest major airport — approximately 3–4.5 hours by road to Vielha via the Tunnel de Vielha (the Airtable figure of 127 minutes appears to understate actual journey time). Barcelona (BCN) and Zaragoza (ZAZ) are 3.5–5.5 hours. Car is strongly recommended — public transport exists but is slow. Accommodation in Vielha is strong but fills fast for the July race weekend; book months in advance. July conditions: 14–21°C in valley (970m), 5–12°C on high passes (2,000–2,600m+) with wind chill. Severe storm risk is a defining feature — pack mandatory gear seriously regardless of forecast. Race start is 16:00 Friday so runners should arrive Thursday at the latest.
