The Ultra Trail Vipava Valley Gladiator loops 60 kilometres from Ajdovščina through Slovenia's wine-producing Vipava Valley and up to the Nanos karst plateau summit at 1,262m — a course that traverses the battlefield where Theodosius I fought the last battle for a unified Roman Empire in 394 AD. The defining moment is the 1,000-metre climb to Nanos summit at kilometre 33, a sustained karst ascent whose biggest single GPX segment ranks 101st out of 390 European ultras for single-climb scale (top 26%). Official D+ is 2,400m over 60km (40 m/km); the descent from Nanos produces the course's largest single drop: 1,072m at a -11.6% average gradient.
A 16-hour time limit and one intermediate cutoff at Vipava (km 49) structure the race, which starts at 07:00 from Ajdovščina and returns to the same finish. The Gladiator carries UTMB Index, ITRA (3 points), and Europe Trail Cup (Trail M) certifications. Trieste airport (TRS) is 35 minutes away. Entry ran €80–110 across six tiers for 2026; group discounts of 5–10% apply for groups of five or more. The race has run since 2015 and sells at medium pace.
