Ultra Trail Vipava Valley Gladiator 60km: Wine Country to Nanos Summit and Back in Slovenia

The Gladiator starts and finishes in a loop from Ajdovščina. It opens with vineyard and hillside terrain via Dolenje and the church of Sv. Marjeta before climbing to the Planina plateau and descending to Slap. The course passes aid stations at Lože (13km), Podnanos (24km), then makes the famous 1,000-metre ascent to the Nanos summit at 1,262m (aid station at km 33). From Nanos the route descends through the Abram farm and a hillside chapel to Vipava (50km) before returning via Budanje, a Roman paved path, and the Hubelj spring to the Ajdovščina finish. Five aid stations are positioned throughout; one intermediate time cutoff applies at the Vipava station (km 49). GPX confirms the actual distance at 63km despite the nominal 60km marketing label.

The Gladiator is UTMB Index certified (earns UTMB Index points; not UTMB World Series Running Stones), ITRA certified with 3 ITRA performance points, and participates in the Europe Trail Cup as a Trail M category race. These certifications make it a useful qualifying race for runners building UTMB Index scores or ITRA points ahead of major mountain events. The Nanos ascent is described by the organisers as a 1,000-metre climb — rising from Podnanos at roughly 260m to the summit at 1,262m, starting at km 24 and reaching the Nanos aid station at km 33, a 9km sustained effort. The plateau summit is exposed to the bora, a katabatic wind that can reach 100km/h, making a waterproof jacket (minimum 10,000mm water column) mandatory gear. The biggest single GPX-confirmed ascent segment rises 365m and ranks 101st of 390 European ultras (top 26%) for single-ascent scale. The remaining gain to the 1,000m total accumulates across adjacent segments of the same continuous push.

Three airports serve the Ajdovščina start and finish. Trieste (TRS) in Italy is closest — approximately 35 minutes by car — making it the shortest airport transfer of any race in this Adriatic zone. Ljubljana (LJU) is roughly 60–90 minutes, and Venice Marco Polo (VCE) adds a further 45–60 minutes beyond Trieste. Buses from Ljubljana to Ajdovščina run during daytime but late-night services are limited; a car is helpful. Accommodation in Ajdovščina and the Vipava Valley is described as good supply, and Trieste is a viable base if arriving from Italy.

Registration for 2026 ran €80–110 across six time-based tiers (early pre-registration through final). The fee includes a technical race T-shirt, personalised RFID bib, five aid stations with food and drinks, a hot finish-line meal, showers and changing facilities, a pickup shuttle for runners who drop at an aid station, and a Roman medal of honour for all finishers. Pre-race perks include free training webinars with a UESCA coach and optional guided recce runs in the Vipava Valley from October through March. Group discounts apply: 5% for 5+ runners, 7% for 15+, and 10% for 25+ (across any distances in the group).
