The K65 loops around Innsbruck starting and finishing at the Landestheater. From the city centre, the route climbs via the Europaratsallee and Hungerburg to the Nordkette limestone ridge above Innsbruck, reaching the high point before the technical Bärfallsteig descent to Kranebitten. The route then continues through Völs, Birgitz, and Götzens, follows the dramatic Sillschlucht gorge trail, and passes through Aldrans and Ampass before the final return to the Landestheater finish. The loop format means runners return to the city centre after circling the mountains surrounding Innsbruck.

The K65 is characterized by a high running proportion — organizers describe it as offering moderate climbs with flowing trails and as suitable for runners attempting their first ultra-trail without requiring full high-alpine exposure. Technical sections include the Nordkette ridge trails and the Bärfallsteig descent on exposed limestone. The Sillschlucht gorge provides a distinctive and dramatic mid-race section. The D+/km rank of 271/390 and Percent-Flat rank of 278/390 place the K65 in the more-accessible half of the European ultra database, though 2,640m D+ over 68.9km constitutes a genuine mountain ultra challenge. Innsbruck Airport (INN) is approximately 10 to 20 minutes from the race start at the Landestheater, making the IATF one of the most accessible fly-in alpine ultras in Europe. Innsbruck is also served by excellent train connections from Vienna, Munich, and Zurich, with the main train station a short walk or tram ride from the Landestheater. Munich Airport (MUC) is approximately 2 to 2.5 hours by car. Accommodation in Innsbruck city centre is plentiful across all price categories; book early for festival week as the event draws large numbers of runners, crew, and spectators.
