The Sandnes Ultratrail 43km is a marathon-distance race with extreme climbing density: D+/km of 55.8 m/km ranks 13th out of 390 European trail races — only 12 races in the database accumulate more vertical per kilometre. The course covers 2,400m D+ over 42.7km of rugged Rogaland coastal-mountain terrain in southwest Norway. What makes it unusual is a statistical paradox: 57.4% of the route is classified as flat, yet average descent gradient ranks 366th out of 390 (INVERTED scale: only 24 races descend more steeply on average).
The terrain is bimodal — long flat coastal paths and forest sections punctuated by brutally steep technical climbs and drops at -11.8% peak gradient. The course originates as an FKT route, 'Sandnes lengste,' crossing multiple peaks with fjord panoramas and lake swimming spots. ITRA-certified; not UTMB-indexed.
