DECATHLON Yagodina Cave Ultra 50km -- branded as the Thracian Ultra 50k -- is a mountain loop ultra starting and finishing at the Shiroka Laka Primary School of Arts in Smolyan Province, Bulgaria's southern Rhodope Mountains. The course covers 50km with 2,630m D+ (52.6 m/km), running entirely in daylight with a 07:00 start and 12-hour cutoff. That gradient density is high -- comparable to serious mountain 50km courses across Central Europe -- and the terrain backs it up: the race opens with a near-vertical wall immediately from the start line, climbs to the Perelik ridge at 1,980m by km 11, then descends nearly 900m over 9km into the valley before two more climbs push deeper into Rhodope forest. The final descent back to Shiroka Laka drops 900m in the last 9km of race distance.
The event is part of the broader DECATHLON Thracian Ultra festival, which also offers a 95km, 21km, and 12km Discovery Race. Decathlon Bulgaria is the title sponsor. First held in 2021, the race has built a loyal domestic following and has been described by multi-distance participants as the most picturesque and authentic trail race in Bulgaria. Women's course record holder Elena Borisova improved the record by 1 hour and 4 minutes at the 2024 edition; the men's course record is not published in the DTR database. ITRA-certified (3 points, Mountain Level 7). Not sold out.
The 2026 edition ran on May 30, 2026; the next edition is expected in late May 2027. The race is accessible from Plovdiv Airport (PDV) at 106 minutes by car -- well within the 180-minute IS FAR threshold. Shiroka Laka is a traditional Bulgarian village at 1,050m, known for its stone-built architecture and role as a centre of Bulgarian folk music. The Rhodope Mountains carry a strong cultural identity in Bulgaria, and the race integrates that backdrop into everything from the finish-line beer to the mandatory bear bell -- a practical requirement given the active wildlife in the area.
